Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
87년 전 우리의 조상들은 이 대륙에 자유에서 태어난 새로운 국가를 건설하고 모든 인간은 평등하다는 주장을 국시로 삼았습니다.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting-place for those who here gave their lives that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
지금 우리는 내전을 치르고 있습니다. 이 전쟁은 이 같은 국가가 과연 영속할 수 있을지 시련을 겪고 있는 것입니다.
우리는 그 전쟁의 일대전장에 모여 있습니다. 우리는 이 나라의 멸망을 막기 위해 여기서 목숨을 버린 분들의 마지막 안식처로서, 이 전장의 일부를 그들에게 바치기 위해 모인 것입니다.
이는 이 나라의 영속을 기원하는 우리들에게 반드시 필요한 일이며 또한 당연한 일입니다.

But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead who struggled here have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain, that this nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.
그러나 보다 큰 의미로 생각한다면, 사실은 우리는 이 땅을 바칠 수도, 정화할 수도, 그리고 신성하게 만들 수도 없습니다. 왜냐하면 이곳에서 싸우고 살아남은 분들과 전사하신 용감한 분들이 이미 이 땅을 신성한 곳으로 만들었으며, 여기에 무언가를 더하고 덜하는 것은 우리의 능력을 훨씬 뛰어넘는 일이라고 하지 않을 수 없기 때문입니다. 세계는 우리가 여기서 한 이야기에 거의 주의하지 않을 것이며, 또한 오래 기억하지 않을 것입니다. 그러나 그들이 여기서 무엇을 했는지는 결코 잊을 수 없습니다. 우리 살아남은 자들은 그들이 그토록 숭고하게 이루어온 미완성의 사명에 헌신할 것을 이 자리에서 맹세해야 합니다. 우리 앞에 남겨진 큰 사명을 위해 몸과 마음을 바쳐야 합니다.
우리는 이들 명예로운 전사들이 모든 것을 바쳤던 목적을 위해 우리의 각오를 다져야 합니다. 즉, 이들 전사자의 죽음을 헛되이 만들지 않을 것, 신의 가호로 이 나라에 새로운 자유가 태어날 것, 그리고 국민의, 국민에 의한, 국민을 위한 정치가 이 지구상에서 사라지지 않을 것을 결심해야 합니다.
